UKI Select Option: Jump Lower, Keep Competing

Everything you need to know about UKI Select. Jump one height lower, no spreads, reduced contacts, and all results still count. A great option for older dogs, recovering dogs, and smaller breeds.

UKI's Select option is designed to keep dogs competing safely and comfortably, even when jumping at full height isn't the best choice. Whether your dog is getting older, recovering from an injury, or simply a breed that benefits from lower impact, Select lets you stay in the game without sacrificing your competitive record.

What Is the Select Option?

When you choose Select, your dog jumps one height category lower than their measured height. For example, a dog that normally jumps at 16 inches would jump at 12 inches under Select. This reduces the physical demand on your dog while still allowing full participation in all classes.

Key Changes Under Select

No Spread Jumps

Spread jumps (double bars or ascending spreads) are removed from the course for Select dogs. All jumps are single-bar jumps. This further reduces the physical effort required, especially for dogs with joint concerns.

Reduced A-Frame Height

The A-frame is set to 5 feet 3 inches for Select dogs, which is lower than the standard height. This makes the A-frame easier and safer to climb, particularly for dogs that may struggle with steep inclines.

Reduced Long Jump

The long jump distance is also reduced under Select. This means less of a stretch for your dog, which is especially helpful for smaller breeds or dogs with back or hip issues.

All Results Still Count

One of the best things about UKI Select is that your results are fully valid. Qualifying runs, level progressions, placements — everything counts the same as it would at regular height. You are not moved into a separate division or a different title track. Your dog competes alongside dogs at their regular height category, and all achievements are recorded normally.

Switching Is Easy

You can switch between Select and regular height freely. There is no paperwork, no waiting period, and no penalty. If your dog is feeling great at one trial, jump regular. If you want to take it easier at the next trial, choose Select. The flexibility is entirely in your hands.

Who Benefits from Select?

  • Older dogs — Dogs that have been competing for years may develop joint stiffness or early arthritis. Select lets them keep doing what they love with less strain.
  • Recovering dogs — Coming back from an injury? Select provides a gentler return to competition while your dog rebuilds confidence and fitness.
  • Smaller breeds — Some smaller dogs benefit from the reduced jump heights and equipment modifications, especially breeds that are close to the border between height categories.
  • Any team that wants lower impact — You don't need a specific reason to choose Select. If you feel your dog would be happier and safer jumping lower, that's reason enough.

How Select Compares to Other Organizations

Other agility organizations offer similar accommodations. AKC has its Preferred heights division, for example. The key difference with UKI Select is simplicity — there is no separate title track, no special registration, and no restrictions on switching back and forth. It is built right into the standard system.

Barkloop fully supports UKI Select height tracking, so trial secretaries can easily manage dogs running at Select heights alongside regular entries. No extra configuration needed — just check Select and Barkloop handles the rest.
